Research & Study

Sahjeevan has been sensitive to clean energy issues since its inception. The work started during the early years with interventions in area of smokeless chullas (stoves) for cooking and biogas tanks. This phase was restricted to creating awareness, demonstration and training. In 2002 a larger initiative was started by setting up the renewable energy cell in Sahjeevan. A partnership was established with other experienced partners like Auroville Renewable Energy (AuroRE) located in Auroville and several vendors and suppliers of RE technologies. In the past 3 years Sahjeevan has gained extensive experience with varied applications of solar energy like solar PV pumps, solar lanterns, solar PV home lights, and solar PV street lights. Since December, 2005 Sahjeevan has initiated a programme in Biomass Gasifier applications. Apart from technologies an effort has been put together toset up an effective delivery mechanism. To remove the high cost barrier several models of deliveries like renting lights and pumps or selling on hire purchase have been tried. The learning’s have been shared with local government and communities through interactions, meetings seminars, training programmes and exhibitions. Sahjeevan has positioned itself as a technology and energy service provider with an effective role in advocacy with government to bring a long lasting change in lives of people and the environment. Sahjeevan focuses on RE applications that can make a difference in the quality of life and incomes of the most marginalized sections of the society.

Objectives

Photographs

Create awareness about Renewable Energy Sources and promotion of energy efficient technologies for livelihood purposes

Promote the concept of solar powered drinking water schemes

Improve income for Agarias and farmers through renewal energy options for pumping and processing

Promote entrepreneurs for solar and gasification on a commercial basis

Develop Renewal energy prototypes for vulnerable groups in the district

Programmes

This knowledge center explores and develops techno-commercial solutions in renewable energy to help the marginalized gain better control of their natural resources and better financial returns for their economic activities.

They have worked with women groups and Panchayats to help them pump their water from the well to the village using solar pumps. Surplus energy from the panels is also used to light the streets. The replacement of the diesel pump helps reduce costs besides carbon emissions. The unit is a service provider and consultant to the Gujarat government on this program.

They have worked with small farmers to make their farming viable by replacing the diesel operated pumps with solar energy. In some cases financial institutions also provided loans to farmers to purchase the pumps over and above the government subsidy.

A sludge pump was designed using solar energy to reduce sewerage recycling costs for a low income colony in Bhuj, therefore enabling the sewerage management to become completely self financed.

Solar lights have been sold, on a hire-purchase model, to craft artisans and fishing community to help them increase their incomes by working after dark and replacing kerosene lamps.

Experiments are being tried to see how diesel pumps can be replaced with wood based gasifiers for salt pan workers to pump brine into their pans, and therefore increase their incomes by 40%!

The unit develops the social-commercial-technical model with people over pilots, and then provides support for up scaling. They run a small service center that provides after sales services as well.
