| This is a team of social workers with a strong orientation on technical
aspects, and technical practitioners who enjoy social communication.
They collaborate with and provide services to the technical knowledge
centers in grounding programmes, and designing the appropriate people’s
institutions. They have a strong gender perspective and believe
that elected peoples bodies must be strengthened to deliver on natural
recourse development, governance and creating the necessary conditions
for weaker sections of their community to gain access to their means
of production. They strengthen user groups and entrepreneurship
for resource management and collective bargaining for better markets.
Over the years they have developed and mainstreamed people’s
institutions in the following areas: |
|
|
| |
Drinking
water: to ensure better governance of drinking water, they
have evolved and strengthened the pani samiti to be the management
concern of the women in the village, and to ensure that they
have legal powers to protect, maintain and distribute water
by having authority from the Panchayat. This program piloted
and demonstrated by Sahjeevan is being upscaled with WASMO
(Government of Gujarat) and ACT. |
| |
Natural resource
development and management: first in the watersheds and then
in the drought proofing programme, they evolved the capacities
of these village institutions to be gender neutral and inspite
of very low literacy, be able to plan and execute activities
with the help of para professionals. To manage the created
assets, they have strengthened the user groups for fodder
banks, grasslands, and water from irrigation dams. The Knowledge
Center has helped many member NGO’s of Abhiyan develop
this approach, including the four rural women’s collectives
of KMVS. |
| |
Milk and
organic agriculture produce: developing the producer institution
to gain from collective marketing is being developed. This
is a model being developed, for replication across the district,
with the National Dairy Development Board, Satvik and Oasis
Agritech as marketing partners. |
| |
Urban housing
for the poor: in collaboration with Hunnarshala Foundation,
this Knowledge Center is trying to strengthen the urban democratic
structure of municipal bodies by organizing area/ward sabhas
to access, and then manage the housing and services for the
poor. |
